Positioning the Mosquito Magnet mosquito traps in the right way is crucial to maximize the benefits of these devices. The operation is not very difficult, just follow a few simple rules that I have collected in this article, completing everything with some personal suggestions.

Determines the main place of reproduction

Mosquito Magnet should be positioned between the source of the mosquito infestation (stagnant water, uncultivated or vegetable-grown fields, dense vegetation, an abandoned construction site) and where people usually stay (patio, porch, swimming pool). In fact, Mosquito Magnet, in addition to interrupting the life cycle of mosquitoes in the area in which it operates, also works as a barrier by catching insects before they can bite you.

Place the trap away from people

The appliance must be positioned near places appreciated by mosquitoes and away from areas where people carry out their activities. Typically a distance of 10 meters is sufficient.

Place the trap upwind of the spawning grounds

Mosquito Magnets attract mosquitoes by also exploiting the diffusion of carbon dioxide. The gas cloud that is created spreads in the surrounding space as a function of many factors.

The main thing to take into consideration is the wind and the direction it comes from. Place Mosquito Magnet in the direction from which the wind blows with respect to the area to be protected. If the wind blows from the north, the device will be positioned in the northern area of your garden so that the cloud of carbon dioxide is carried towards the area to be protected from the draft.

If you live in an area with little wind the Mosquito Magnet can be placed anywhere in your garden without worrying about occasional draughts.

Place the trap in an open field

Carbon dioxide is heavier than air, so it stays close to the ground. Mosquitoes (which also fly low) follow the call to the trap. If the device is placed in tall grass or surrounded by bushes, the flow of carbon dioxide will be impeded and mosquitoes will identify it less easily.

The presence of obstacles such as bushes, boundary walls, hedges or dividing walls influence the diffusion of the carbon dioxide cloud. A garden surrounded by a brick boundary wall or thick hedge prevents the carbon dioxide cloud from expanding beyond the boundaries and attracting mosquitoes from outside. Placing an appliance close to a wall is not recommended as the gas expansion would be halved.

Place the trap in the shade

Mosquitoes love shady and cool areas. Place the Mosquito Magnet in the shade and not in full sun. In fact, during the hot hours of the day, mosquitoes usually rest in places with thicker vegetation and then come out in force at sunset. Placing the trap in a cool and shaded area will make it easier for mosquitoes to approach and then be sucked in by the fan.

Weather exposure

Mosquito Magnets are built to withstand the most adverse climatic conditions, they are not afraid of summer storms and scorching heat. However, they can be damaged if hit from the side by jets of pressurized water. Pointing a hose or sprinkler system at the side fins, which are used to disperse heat, could damage the electronics. Position your Mosquito Magnet away from direct jets of the irrigation system.

Tiered gardens

If the garden to be protected has terraces or steep slopes, the suggestion is to place Mosquito Magnet in the highest part. Carbon dioxide, which is the main attractant for mosquitoes, is heavier than air so it is easier for it to expand downwards rather than the other way around.

Shape and size of the garden

An important element to evaluate is the shape of the garden. If it is true that Mosquito Magnet is recommended for gardens larger than 500 m2, it is also true that a square garden facing only one side of a 100 m2 house guarantees sufficient distances to position the device according to the rules.

When the house is placed in the center of a garden, assuming a square shape of the building, four zones are created, one on each side. Mosquito Magnet positioned on only one of these sides protects at least three sides of the house effectively. The opposite portion is also protected. In fact, as the carbon dioxide cloud expands and moves, even the mosquitoes do not stay still. Flying in search of prey is most likely pribut or then perceive the carbon dioxide emitted by the appliance, even if this is on the opposite side of the house.

So a garden of 1000 m2 with the house in the middle can be effectively defended by Mosquito Magnet even if each portion is 250 m2.

POSSIBLE REDUCTION OF BENEFITS

There are some instances where the benefits of carbon dioxide mosquito traps may be limited.

Mosquitoes of the rice fields: Mosquitoes of this species, which proliferate in rice fields and brackish waters, usually travel many kilometers from their birthplace to consume a blood meal. They recognize each other because they attack at dusk in huge swarms. They arrive suddenly and then disappear after about two hours in an equally sudden way. Proliferating at a great distance from where they cause nuisance, you cannot fight with mosquito traps as it is impossible to interrupt their reproduction cycle.

Wind: The presence of sustained wind for most of the spring-summer season and with frequent changes of direction does not allow the carbon dioxide cloud to expand uniformly and to persist long enough to attract mosquitoes. However, even mosquitoes cannot fly in the presence of wind, so there shouldn't be any infestation problems.

Don't let your guard down

Even if the Mosquito Magnet mosquito traps are effective, we must not let our guard down for everything related to the treatment of stagnations. It is useless to attract and capture mosquitoes in one corner of the garden if you continue to breed them in the opposite corner. It is therefore essential to always prevent stagnation and treat those waters that cannot be eliminated with specific larvicidal products.
